Offshore Europe 2013: What Our Attendees Are Talking Abou
From smart objects to ancient armoury, the Spartan stand at Offshore Europe 2013 was bustling with interesting visitors and conversation topics.
The 5 most common themes on the Spartan stand were:
1. 50 more years of oil & gas
George Osborne’s keynote speech focused on the long term future of North Sea production. The next 50 years will be very different from the last 40 however. Exploration and production costs in deeper water will squeeze profit margins, and we had a lot of feedback confirming that supply chain efficiency must radically improve going forward.
“The future is about volume and value” – George Osborne
2. The Aberdonian Heat Wave
There was no shortage of comment on the heat inside the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre earlier in the week. The Spartan stand was bang in the middle of a large tent that acted as a greenhouse, with temperatures peaking in the mid 30’s. Unlike OE2011, we didn’t have to use our hot water bottles, scarves and bobble hats this year.
3. Smart Objects
There were lots of exhibitors and attendees at the show who manufacture physical equipment. Competition is fierce and original equipment manufacturers are looking for added value services to offer their customers. We had lots of people asking for demonstrations on how Phalanx industrial apps, combined with barcode and RFID technology, could make their objects smart. We predict a growing tide of ‘Smart Objects’ will flow into the oil and gas supply chain over the next few years.

4. Equipment Maintenance and Management
The focus on equipment safety in the North Sea continues to grow, and many of our visitors are asking questions on how to improve their equipment management processes. The Spartan team left the exhibition thinking about how we can simplify the data capture of critical equipment information to speed up the process and increase user compliance.
5. The Spartan Battle Helmet
Often referred to as the ‘fourth man’, the Spartan Battle helmet was once again a star of the stand. Jim was often seen wandering the halls in full battle gear. Even Nick Nairn stopped mid-flow during a cooking exhibition to praise the Spartan warriors!
We will be back…
